2007 was a bad year on my site for vandalism- three different sets of break-ins, almost every shed broken into or entered, two sheds set on fire. Probably every other site has suffered too, some of them repeatedly. What can be done? (Apart from manning each corner of the sites overnight with machine-gun towers...!) Most of our plot holders have now given up locking their sheds now. All that has been stolen has been a few screwdrivers, knives and hammers. It is the damage caused which is worse, and the unsettling it causes. It is horrible being the first person in at the weekend after a break-in, not knowing whether they may have come back. One summer's evening kids cut through our fence whilst plot holders were still present! Luckily they ran off when challenged but what if they hadn't?
The Police will allocate an Incident number, and collect details of losses and damage, but what can they do?
It might be a good idea for us to collate all incidents on every site, with a view to making the point to the Council and the Police that sites, and plot holders, are vulnerable.
Does anyone have any suggestions or comments?
secuirity in allotments
andy mackie from greendykes.
hi pauline,
you should apply for a plot at greendykes as here there is no problem with secuirity as they are monitored 24/7 and it`s like
blackpool in the evening.
the only problem they have is the odd rabbit or fox and all the tools are in secure storage
all this for only £10 per annum.
Thanks Andy
Hi Andy,
Thanks very much for letting me know about your safe site!
Thankfully, since my post, there have been absolutely no problems at all on my site (asides from the odd rabbit or ten and a few deer but that is another story!) I hope that this post does not tempt fate.
Greendykes is a bit too far away for me- but it is good to know that you have managed to overcome a very typical problem on allotment sites. Some of them, including my site, are situated well away from overlooking properties which allows vandals ease of access.
Cheers
Pauline

I would recommend contacting your local councillors and community police officer. We did this on our site and had random patrols carried out by the local community officer, which certainly helped with the situation. I agree that we should collate all incidents on all sites and present these to the Council.
