Allotments in Livingston

I am in the process of trying to find out contact details for Deans Meadows Allotments in LIvingston to add my name to any waiting list, if anyone can help me i would be grateful.

I am amazed that an expanding town like Livingston has NO council run allotments and how difficult i have found it to track down contact details. Surely i can not be the only person in Livingston wanting to rent an allotment to provide food for my family whilst enjoying a hobby which i can share and pass on a love of to my children.

According to information i collected at 'Gardening Scotland' if six or more people contact the council on the lack of allotment provision then the council are obliged to look into providing some. Is this right and what is the best way to find out if there are other people in Livingston who are interested? I would welcome any suggestions.

Deans Meadows allotments

I am on the waiting list for Deans Meadows, you should be able to put yourself on the waiting list if you phone Isabel on 01506 201152. But there are not many plots and although I don't think there are a lot of names on the waiting list it is likely to be a long time before they come available.
hope this helps.

i have also contacted the Council and asked if they would take a note of the fact I was wanting an allotment. I suspect to acheive anything positive, will require a more co-ordinated approach such as a petition.

deans meadows

Hi,

I was number 5 in December. I have been on the list for 18 months but I was told that it could be up to another five years before I get an allotment.

allotments

hi fi, maybe we could get that petition together and take it along to a local mp.im sure we could get enough names on it to persuade them as the waiting time at deans meadows is too long.

good news

i was suprised last week by a phonecall from Deans meadows I have been offered a half plot which I have accepted, there was another one available which I presume was offered to the next person on the list. There are now 20 people on the waiting list and so they are going to offer half plots as they come available( they are still a good size) to ensure people get access to land as fast as possible. Also the council visited the site to see if it could be extended. i don't know what the outcome of those discussions were , but I will try and find out. This may be the best course of action in the immediate future to push for the extension of deans meadows if they are already considering this option

Hi Natalie Did you ever

Hi Natalie

Did you ever manage to speak with someone at the Deans Meadows Allotments? We are also interested in adding our names to the waiting list, and are equally astounded that there are no council allotments in Livingston, given how small most of the gardens are!

I'd love to hear how you got on.

Regards
Elaine

West Lothian contact details

Hi Natalie,
According to the Finding Scotland's Allotments booklet of 2007, produced by the Scottish Allotments & Gardens Society (SAGS), you can contact the West Lothian Council's Operational Services on 01506 776629.

Also listed are sites at Bridgend, West Calder, and two at Winchburgh.

Perhaps you could find other interested parties on this web site, by word of mouth or advertise in your local paper?
I believe there is a statutory obligation for local authorities to consider provision. If you contact SAGS via their web site www.sags.org.uk, they should be able to confirm the position and the processes.

Good luck!

Pauline
