Hello
I am currently a student in Edinburgh and I have a keen interest in growing my own food. Unfortunately I live in a small city centre flat five stories up and while I am on the waiting list for an allotment I will most likely have moved out of the city by the time I get one!!
Meanwhile, I am trying to set up an initiative with the university in which students are encouraged to grow their own food, and the benifits of this are discussed. Many students who are environmentally minded or who just want to grow their own struggle with the fact that they have no where to do this, nor any knowledge of how. I am currently processing an application to the university for a small plot of land to undertake this project on, and while I have no idea if this will be succesful or not, I will continue to refine and re-apply over the last few years of my studies.
However...
I have very limited knowledge of growing food - an issue facing most young people of today who were never taught these valuable skills. And while I don't know whether the initiative I am setting up will be up and running this year, or the next, I want to broaden my knowledge of growing your own!
I am therefore offering my eager help to anyone who would like to take me on as a kind of 'apprentice allotment owner'! I really would love to get stuck in and I would be over the moon to offer my help doing jobs on an allotment in exchange for guidence, advice and 'teaching' on how to grow various fruits, vegetables and herbs.
If anyone is interested, or knows of another place/website etc that you think would be good for me to get in touch with, then please let me know.
Thank you so much,
Laura
