blue asbestos found in greendykes allotments

there have been several small bits of blue asbestos found in the
allotments./ this was reported to the chairman/plot manager.
and agreed it was asbestos but refused to have the soil checked
by the british soil association as this would lead to possible closure.
what are the danger!s of growing in this soil as the asbestos has lain in the soil for forty years,

SOIL CHECK PLEASE

green fingers?

former plot holder

brian.shields hi a former plot holder has found asbestos in the plots at greendykes. after getting advice from the Council Scientific Adviser
Analytical & scientific Services
His advice as follows:
If there is asbestos on the site it will be in the form of a bound product.
There is no risk to humans or plants as asbestos will not transfer via the soil into plants.
the only risk would be if the asbestos was drilled, sawed, broken or disturbed in such a way as to release particles into the air.
If any plot holders encounter any processed product/material/item in the soil you should err on the side of caution and treat it as an asbestos item and dispose of the material thus:
Set it aside. do not cut, saw, drill or break the item.
as it is in the soil it should be damp but you can soak the item if required.
doulbe bag it and place the item in the bin.
There is no need for concern. There is no risk to the plot holders working on or anyone consuming vegetables from the allotment site.
Regards
Brian Shields
chairman of GOALs.

goals.

you cannot just double bag a toxic substance like this and bin it as
you should know yourself having attended a asbestos course.
this material should not be handled .
would you let a child pick up a piece ?
look at the web and see for yourself the dangers of this material.
do you think because most of it is buried under tons of topsoil & peat that the danger has gone now?
stop and think about the next generations using the ground.
fibres from this material are taken in through the root system
and into the vegetables that you are eating,
LOOK IT UP !!
