Dear allotmenteers (?!),
I've been commissioned to write a piece for Scottish Field magazine about a recent proposal to turn some of Edinburgh's public golf courses into allotments.
I was hoping that some of you might have a few forthright thoughts on such a scheme.
Should this be the case then you can reach me at rgfletcher@gmail.com or by calling 0778 717 6428.
I look forward to hearing from you,
Rob Fletcher
There was never a contest
Sorry Rob- this may ruin your chance of having an article commissioned- a comment made by City of Edinburgh Council was completely blown out of context by the Edinburgh Evening News.
Robert Aldridge, Director of Leisure at CEC, said himself that it was never a serious proposition. I know that it was also reported on television but that doesn't make it any more likely... the media obviously picked up the newspaper article sensing potential controversy.
To be fair to the Council, CEC have already identified at least 32 other sites (unrelated to golf) which have possibilities of being developed as allotment sites. The only factor involved which may prevent this occuring in full is lack of finance!
This cannot develop into an allotment versus golf scrap, as it happens some plotholders are also golfers anyway...!
Dear Pauline, many thanks
Dear Pauline,
many thanks for your enlightening reply - although, as you note, it might not be great news as far as an article is concerned.
I am, however, keen to come to your AGM tomorrow if possible. If someone could let me know it would be great.
Rob
