Allotment discussion

Welcome

This forum is here to discuss allotment problems and experiences and to ask for advice.

Shed break-ins

Three sheds broken into on Leith Links allotments at the weekend (Saturday 29th to Sunday 30th Oct). Nothing appears to be stolen, but contents strewn around/broken and some plants destroyed. We're trying to plant up more deterrents along our boundaries, but that's a long term solution. Meanwhile: is barbed wire (and lots of warning notices) the only way to go? What do other sites do?

Food Bartering system

I own a cafe and was wondering if allotment owners would trade their surplus fruit/veg for yummy goods from my cafe e.g. 3 apples = coffee. The recipient would receive a voucher to be reimbursed then or on a future date.
I was wondering if it was a good idea. Would you be interested? Can you think of issues which can be discussed?
I would be very grateful for your thoughts.

Potato blight

Yet again potato blight struck my plot this year. By the end of august all the halms were down and rotting. I got the tatties dug up quickly but the blight had still gotten into maybe a 10th of the them which had to be discarded. All the outside tomatoes succumbed to the blight as well, though the miserable weather meant they weren't likely to ripen anyway.

Out of interest did you get hit by the blight this year and which site are you on. It would be interesting to see if it is more endemic on some sites than others.

too much rain!

I'm called courgettes but my poor courgettes have been a complete wash-out this year - in spite of being treated to lovely compost. I have never had such a miserable yield before.

What they really want is sunshine! Please could you give me some tips about which courgette types do best in this weather? I would like to start planning for next year.

Fire damage on Craigentinny allotment noticed today (Saturday 12th March)

I don't know if this is extensive, just noticed some of the wood structures at the back of my plot are either burned away or charred, the plot next to mine has more damage though. Anyone with a plot that has the mesh fence that separates it from the golf course might want to check their sites.

nz flatworms

i have found some 15 (approx) NZ Flatworms in one place on my allotment, in Saughton mains, they were under some large builders bags full of leaves, Do i have to report this? and who to?
and... is this a lot of flat worms in one place?... i notice there is no discussion or info on the website.
i have collected a 22 page word doc from various internet sites , but i would like some first hand and local knowledge;

vegetable sharing scheme

Hello fruit and veggie growers.

Not sure I'm in the right section of the site but anyway....

I am undertaking some research on a possible vegetable sharing scheme and am hoping for some feedback on some questions I have.

Allotment history-can you help?

I am seeking help from the older (and knowledgeable) allotmenters in FEDAGA. I am Chair of Midmar committee and last year, at one of our social events, our previous Chair was surprised by being handed a medallion.
It had been kept under wraps for nearly 30 years and had been awarded on a, more or less, annual basis between the years 1961 -1980. I can find no-one on the site who knows any history behind this award. I'll give brief description and try to upload a photograph(sorry, the dimensions are too great).

Scotland Street Lane Allotments

Does anyone know who to contact about the Scotland Street Lane Allotments or know whether you have to live on Scotland Street to get one.

Thanks
